The second in Redeye's series of photographic walks in Manchester investigates the increasing role of security and surveillance in cities, with David Dunnico.

David Dunnico is a documentary photographer from Manchester. He is interested in how cities are turning citizens into consumers. Recent exhibitions have included 'Reality TV' which was described as a "relevant and articulate" project about CCTV, when it was shown alongside a production of Orwell's 1984 (Royal Exchange Theatre) and 'Sold Out' a subversive look at advertising (Kiosk Gallery). His work is often polemic, but comes with a healthy dose of sarcasm and humour. He has previously talked about these themes at Redeye and Nottingham Trent University.

You can see his CCTV project at: www.ddcc.tv
and read his blog at: http://daviddunnico.wordpress.com/

David writes:
"There has been a fundamental change in people’s place in public. Being in a city for anything other than shopping or consuming is seen as ‘suspicious’ (especially if you are taking photographs). What was once public has been privatised – given by public bodies to private developers, in the name of regeneration, in a kind of 21st century re-run of the Enclosure Acts. Security guards and CCTV are used to deny access to those who cannot or will not spend, or those whose presence might tarnish the ‘retail experience’ of those who are. It is not Big Brother who is watching – it's your supermarket.

"This walk will show you how Manchester looks at us and how we can look at Manchester. We will have a game of surveillance bingo and it may persuade you to give up taking single photos and work on a project and stop reading magazines about photography and start reading books about stuff."

This event is aimed at open-minded and independent photographers who find the subject interesting and would like to explore it some more. There won't be any technical information about photography.

Participants should meet at 10:30 on 17th July at Chinese Arts Centre, Market Buildings, Thomas St, Manchester M4 1EU. The walk will end between 14:00 and 15:00. Please bring a camera you don't mind carrying round for the day. A telephoto lens is a good idea.
